Panache + AoA for Fleinn Ragnarsson

This was completed in three stages. It was drawn out and painted on Mar. 29, and then half of the calligraphy on Apr. 9; I had problems with the vermillion and the sepia bleeding in to each other and so I quit in frustration and it took me a good while to have the desire to try to finish it. I completed the calligraphy, fixing up some of the bleeding a little, and did the whitework on Jul. 5.

The image is based on fol 92v of Oxford Bodleian Library MS. Canon. Liturg. 251, end of the 14th C, which is reproduced on p. 201 of Maurits Smeyers, Flemish Miniatures.

AoA for Eleonoora of Tammilinna

The drawing and gold work was done Mar. 25, the painting Mar. 26, and then the calligraphy Apr. 9. I was happier with this before I did the calligraphy; I still don't seem to have the right combination of nibs and ink and paper. I'm still very happy with how the border turned out.

AoAs for Iida Juhanantytar and Hildegard Juhanantytar

These two scrolls were designed to look like facing pages of the same manuscript, much like their exemplar. Iida's was done on March 5, 7, 9, and 18; it took about one day to sketch and ink in the outlines, one day to do the gold, one day to do the red and blue, and another to do the calligraphy. Hildegrad's was done on March 18 and 20; I sketched it and inked it first day, and then settled down to do all the painting the second day, and finished up the calligraphy later that evening.

Text. Iida's reads:

Presentium auctoritate nos Michael et Moira rex et regina Drachenwaldenses altamus subjectum Iidam filiam Johannis ad ordinem domine agnitionis huius virtutis et dignitatem. Assignamus jus tali armis prout deferet cum collegio armorum. Fit manibus nostris in 17 die Junii anno societatis xli.

Which translates to:

By the authority of these presents we Michael and Moira king and queen of Drachenwald raise our subject Iida Juhanantytär to the rank of lady in recognition of her worth and dignity. We grant to her all right to such arms as she will register with the college of arms. Done by our hands on the 17th day of June anno societatis 41.

For Hildegard's I wanted to use a different initial, and had a choice (given my exemplar) of "L", "C", or "I". It took a bit of tweaking but I ended up with this text beginning with "L":

Licet et bonus est honorare virtutem et dignitatem nostri subjecti Hildegardis filie Johannis. Nos igitur Alaricus et Nerissa rex et regina Drachenwaldenses altamus Hildegardem ad ordinem domine et assignamus ei jus tali armis prout deferet cum collegio armorum. Fit manibus nostris in 1 die Septembris anno societatis xlii.

Which translates to:

It is lawful and it is good to honor the excellence and worth of our subject Hildegard Juhanantytär. Therefore we Alaric and Nerissa king and queen of Drachenwald raise Hildegard to the rank of lady and grant to her all rights to such arms as she shall register with the college of arms. Done by our hands on the 1st day of September anno societatis xlii.

Lindquistringes for Katarina von Danzig

Text: Carolingian miniscule, reading:

Unto all good and true citizens of Drachenwald these present letters seeing or hearing, greetings from Alaric and Nerissa, king and queen right well beloved. In recognition of the works that our dear subject Katarina von Danzig has rendered to us, our lands, and our lords, we hereby offer to her admission in our Orden des Lindquistringes, which confers the right to display the insignia of the order, a ring formed of a wingless dragon in annulo Or, maintaining with all four legs and mouth a gem gules. Dated at Flintheath, 13 of the month of October, a.s. 42.

Done Jan. 12, 17, and 18.

Paints: Talens gouache, gold, vermillion, carmine, black intenso, white, and ultramarine light. The pink is carmine + white, and the purple is carmine mixed with the already mixed ultramarine light + white, for the light blue bits.

Ink: Ecoline sepia and vermillion. The nib was a Mitchell 3.5 round.

Lindquistringes for Barekr Bjorgeirsson

This is a backlog Lindquistringes.

The text reads:

by these presents alaric and nerissa king and queen of drachenwald offer to barekr bjorgeirsson entrance into our order of the Lindquistringes in recognition of the service that he has rendered to us and ours done the 13th day of october, a.s. 42, in the shire of flintheath.

I transliterated this text into the Danish runes from ca. 900 AD at http://www.arild-hauge.com/edruner.htm. It's not a direct, letter to letter, transliteration, since this futhark has only 16 characters. However, if someone sat down with the image and the website, I think it should be possible to figure out from that alone what the original text was.

The image was designed to look like a rune stone, particularly the Bodilsker V Rune Stone, Bornholm, the Ny Larsker II Rune Stone, Bornholm, and the "stars" from the Gallehus Horn. The scroll was done Dec. 29 and 30.

AoA for Eleanor of Pont Alarch

The initials and the hand are adapted from Codex Gottwicensis 556 (447) (go to http://www.hmml.org/Vivarium/hmml_collections.htm and do a keyword search for this). The illuminated capitals fascinated me both since they are sans serif and because the strokes are almost all the same width (and I'd been told that mono-stroke-width, sans serif fonts were not period!). The Codex is from the 15th century. The scroll was done Nov. 15 and 16.

AoA for Annemieke

My very first scroll that I calligraphed and illuminated myself. The hand is gothic textura quadrata, the floral border is based on Walter Arts GAllery MS 185, fol 14v, Dutch 1420-1430, and the inner border on Hessische Landes- und Hochschulbiliothek Darmstadt MS 2296, Dutch ca. 1400. It's an AoA for someone whose persona is Dutch and who is Dutch in real life.

The text reads in translation Pay heed to the words of Alaric and Nerissa, King and Queen of Drachenwald. Know that by these letters we recognize the worth and dignity of our subject Annemieke. We raise her to the rank of lady and grant to her all rights to such arms as she shall register with the college of arms. Done by our hands on the third day of November, in the year of the society XLII.
